4 more things to buy when planning your party

It can be difficult to determine how much stuff you actually need to buy for a party, and it can end up being expensive if you don’t plan it right. We’ve come up with some helpful shopping tips for you when it comes to getting things like plates, cups, and cutlery.

If you follow the guidelines below it should help you and your pocket book!

Plates & Bowls

7” Plates

Generally used for Appetizers, cake and desserts. If you’re only serving Appetizers then you’ll want to count on people using 2 plates each, but if you’re using the small plates for cake or desserts one plate per guest should be fine. We offer a wide variety of plastic and paper, round or square plate options. Seven-inch plates in solid colors are generally sold in packs of 24 while patterned or licensed design plates are usually in packs of 8.

9” Plates

These plates are perfect if you are serving small sandwiches, wraps, chips and dips, pasta salads, fruits and veggies, and snack meats and cheeses. You’ll want to figure on one per person. We offer a wide variety of plastic and paper, round or Square plates. Nine-inch plates in solid colors are generally sold in packs of 24 while patterned or licensed design plates are usually in packs of 8.

10” Plates

These plates are awesome for a Buffet style dinner or a Barbeque. One per person for Barbeque or two per person if you’re doing buffet style. Ten-inch plates are generally available in plastic, solid colors, sold in packs of 20.

Bowls

Bowls are great for salads. ice cream or snacks like chips, pretzels, and popcorn. They also make nice serving bowls for smaller items like dips. Plan on using one per person. Solid color bowls are available in paper or plastic in packs of 20.

Flatware

Forks, Knives, and Spoons

You’ll want to plan for 1 forks, 1 knife, and 1 spoon per person. If you’re serving only appetizers and desserts you will want to plan for 2 forks and 1 spoons per guest. Solid color plastic utensils generally come in packs of 24 each, but larger counts are available in limited colors.

Plastic/Paper Cups

Punch Cups

Generally, they come in either 5 or 9 oz’s in sizes. You’ll want to get about 1 to 2 per person.
Pop and Beer

Generally, you will want to use the 12oz or 16oz cups for these beverages, with about 1 to 2 per person. If you’re not sure how many to buy you can always purchase a Sharpie marker and have all your guests write their names on their glasses. That way they won’t have to worry about losing their glass or picking up a new one because they can’t find theirs! Solid color plastic cups generally come in packs of 20 each, but larger counts are available in limited colors.

Hot/Cold Paper Cups

The standard size cup is 9oz, and you’ll want to need to get about 1 to 2 per person. Solid color paper cups generally come in packs of 24 each.

Serving Dishes

Trays/Platters

Platters generally come in plastic or paper, and a variety of shapes and sizes. They’re generally larger than 10 inches and are perfect for serving snack meat, cheese, crackers, pretzels, vegetables, and cookies. Trays generally come in a wide variety of colors to match your party theme and décor. Depending on how much food you’re serving you’ll want anywhere from 2 to 4 trays.

Bowls

Bowls are perfect for serving things like chips, dips, pasta salads, salads, and nuts or mints, and are easy to refill and easier than your guests reaching their hands in bags. You’ll want bigger bowls for items like potato chips, salads, and pasta salads while smaller serving bowls are ideal for dips, nuts, and mints. You’ll want a separate bowl for each item.

Utensils

You’ll want to provide spoons, spatulas, tongs, and or food picks for your guests so that the food stays sanitary. Food picks or tongs are perfect when you’re serving small appetizers or items like meats and cheeses or vegetables. Spoons and ladles are used for dips, salads, nuts, and mints, with one spoon for each item in a bowl. If you decide to use tongs you could get 1 to 2 for each platter you’re using.
